If your project is scheduled for broadcast, the music it contains will be monitored by music Performing Rights Organisations (PROs). PROs are music rights management organisations who have existing agreements with TV networks, radio stations, and other public broadcasters. In the UK this is the responsibility of the Performing Rights Society (PRS). The US equivalents are ASCAP & BMI, and in Canada, SOCAN.
Broadcasters are obligated to report to PROs all the music used in their content. Based on this information, PROs will renumerate artists based on how often their music is played.
If you regularly create content intended for broadcast, then you should procure the DMT® PRO Licence. In doing so, you do not need to worry about paying any additional fees; this is handled exclusively by the broadcaster and PRO. However, you have a duty to accurately report the music used in your project to the PRO (PRS in the UK) and the music publisher (us).
